Talk Descriptions

Three lectures will be given on a broad range of brain-related topics.  Each talk can be understood on its own, so come to whichever suits your interest.  Our goal is to explain the workings of the brain so that everyone can easily understand - no science background is necessary!

  1. Form & Function – Tuesday March 22, 7 PM Ever wonder how the brain works?  Come and learn the basics.  We will provide an overview of brain and nervous system structure, how information is carried throughout the brain, and how these signals create behaviors, such as reflexes.  
  2. Neurodegenerative Diseases & Mental Illness – Tuesday March 29, 7 PM  In their lifetime, virtually everyone will be impacted by mental illness or a neurodegenerative disease, either with themselves or a family member.  We will provide an overview of some common mental illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases.
  3. Addiction Tuesday April 5, 7 PM At what point does social or recreational drug use become addiction?  Is addiction a choice or a disease?  Is addiction genetic or environmental?  We will cover these and many other questions surrounding addiction.
